Boaz Adelekan is an artist, teacher and speaker who desires to empower, educate and embolden whoever he encounters. His love for people, teaching and its intersection with creativity justifies his passion for Spoken Word Poetry and his integral contribution to philanthropic organisations.

Boaz has engaged wholeheartedly from a young age in whatever captivated his interest. From school sports to theatre productions, he yearned to leave a trail of virtue and excellence. Whilst his interests have evolved, his desire to be a symbol of authenticity has remained constant.

As a Philosophy graduate and a lover of exploration and introspection, he is constantly reminded of his purpose in life. Instead of embarking on this journey alone, he has made his quest for answers to life’s deepest questions open to all. This characterises the nature of his spoken word which discuss matters of purpose and identity.

Boaz’s ventures has personally taught him the value of strategic intervention in the lives of others. He’s desired to embody what he teaches, with servant leadership being an essential pillar of his mantra. Boaz’s involvement in the Education sector as a teacher frequently provides a reality check, as celebration of his poetic prowess is replaced by veracious and inquisitive students.

Ultimately, Boaz finds solace in knowing people are being impacted and shown their value. His goal is to bring solutions to the world’s current difficulties by touching and engaging with a single life at a time.

I had listened to Boaz’s short film titled, ‘It Starts With Me’, it was a brilliant piece.

I have witnessed Boaz lead workshops as a graduate and his university projects he completed whilst still at University.

Whilst listening to his spoken word poetry podcast at moments I was laughing out loud, the next tears were running down my face. I don’t exaggerate.

The workshop Boaz designed to teach was beautifully designed and engaged students from all backgrounds and perspectives. I valued the way Boaz drew from his own experiences as a creative practitioner, as well as his professional experience as a teacher, to create a learning environment that was at once open, supportive, valuably vulnerable and reflective. The depth of engagement, the thoughtfulness and reflectiveness, and the stories that were shared were testament to Boaz embodying Parker J Palmer’s assertion that ‘we teach who we are’. Boaz leads by example and in doing so have helped to establish the values of the cohort and their work together going forward.

Boaz is an excellent and truthful storyteller. His skilful command of language convicts and transports the listener or reader to the scene he vividly paints through words and powerful visuals.

I first worked with Boaz in my play ‘ an evening with verse writer’ where he played the drums and supported the composition of the play’s score. His contribution to the sold-out production was indelible and several industry professionals commented on his solid timing.

His commitment to his craft is awe-inspiring and he is intentional about pulling stories from the margin to the centre through a range of mediums : video , text , audio etc. As a teacher, Boaz’s pedagogy is centred on honesty which allows his teaching transform the hearts of all who encounter his words. For instance, his guest lecture on the Warwick IATL module Change ( which I co-convened ) was cited by students in essays and conversations.

Attending the listening party was an enlightening experience as Boaz invited his audience to question their own preconceptions surrounding freedom. At times the room echoed with laughter, or was silent with reflection, but throughout it all we remained inspired by his words, the film, and each other.

With his striking visuals and poetic genius, Boaz Adelekan explores the concept of freedom by taking his audience on an immersive journey through identity, grief and the socio-economic circumstances plaguing black youth.

To me, this project was more than just a 6 minute film. Prior to its screening, Boaz presented us with a behind the scenes video, documenting not only the production process, but also the mental preparation that preceded it. Tackling the question “what does it mean to be free?”  ultimately led him on a journey through self-discovery and the unpredictability of life;  a journey in which i was lucky enough to witness.

A really inspirational poet of the spoken word who held a critical audience in the palm of his hand.

Boaz is truly an amazing artist. His work flows in the careful balance between clarity and creativity that is key to any artistic work. The best artists in the industry  are those whose art express the potential for good in life and whose character reflects that good. Boaz is the artist, the art and the good. It my pleasure to be acquainted with him and his work.

I listened to and assisted in assessing Boaz's spoken word poetry podcast for a university module.

Boaz is so talented with language. His choice of words, syntax, sounds and imagery is so vivid and dextrous in the way it explores the possibilities of language, including the use of figurative language. Boaz's ability to also evoke so many different emotions in his reader and audience is also impressive. This piece of work not only shows a keen and insightful piece on different structural issues within our society, but it is also a beautiful artwork.

I think we would all agree that the world, our society and perhaps ourselves as individuals are facing the most challenging of times. Very little seems to make sense and we have more questions than answers. Boaz Adelekan speaks to the world as it is today. He speaks of the society that we experience and he addresses our individual questions about where we fit in.

He has a wonderful ability to construct and frame words that resonate with power and authenticity. I have come to his work late in life, but I’m glad I have.

Boaz always wants the best for the people around him and his love for others always comes out in his work.

I was fortunate enough to attend the Sky Arts Listening Party for the video where he relayed the detailed process of producing the video and I was in awe of how much work he put in and how passionate he was about inspiring young men in particular.

Outside of his creative projects, Boaz has also supported young people through other means. From his talk at an event I held during my time at our university’s ACS on supporting student’s creative ventures and his work supporting a black poetry collective called The Reclaim Project.
